During our 35 days in The Dominican Republic, one of the most exciting things on our bucket list was exploring the oldest European settlement in the Americas; Santo Domingo.

We decided to take the 4 hour drive through the mountains towards the heart of the Dominican Republic during our last week on the island.

We were not disappointed, read about our 3 day stay and our adventures right here. Additionally, we were fortunate enough to receive a rare bonus, our hotel was amazing in every possible way.

We stayed at the luxurious and heritage filled Hostal Nicolas De Ovando, a truly memorable stay.

Hostal Nicolas De Ovando is located in the heart of the Colonial City of Santo Domingo on the first ever paved street of the new world where it was originally built as the residence of Governor Nicolas De Ovando in 1502. Declared a UNESCO Heritage site, every stone, patio, wall and fountain tells a story of Christopher Columbus’ Hispanola.

If you are like us and driving into Santo Domingo, ask a Moto Taxi to lead you to the Colonial Zone to avoid getting lost.

It is no wonder that this historical hotel in Santo Domingo has been host to Royals, celebrities, artists, athletes and fashion icons from all over the world as it features amazing rooms, a serene oasis in the middle of a bustling metropolis, great pool & tanning deck, beautiful views, amazing food at La Residence, sweet balconies, superb service and all the amenities of a 5 star hotel but in a very boutique kind of way steps away from every tourist attraction and gourmet restaurants in Santo Domingo.

La Residence Restaurant

Delicious Riesling wine to go with dinner.

Our stay was every bit as special, the rooms were spacious, modern (even though nestled in a 514 year old building) and comfortable. Terremotto, our pet dog also enjoyed himself freely as Hostal Nicolas De Ovando is pet friendly.

Fresh flowers in the room were a nice touch.

Finally, the staff was amazing, attentive and dedicated where one only needs to ask and it shall be done. Hopefully we are lucky enough in the future to stay here again.
